The best way to improve any soil — whether it’s heavy clay or sandy — is to add organic matter. Compost is king. Work 2–3 inches of compost into your beds each spring. Over time this improves drainage in clay soils, improves moisture retention in sandy soils, and feeds beneficial soil organisms.
